Rune Uruz

Uruz is a rune of primal power that is not begged for or accumulated, but already lives in the body. The aurochs — the wild ancestor of the domestic bull, extinct in the 17th century — was for the Northern peoples an image of untamed strength: larger, fiercer, and more uncontrollable than any domesticated animal. The rune inherited this quality entirely: it is about muscles, character, and will, not about what can be counted and set aside.

A second, equally important layer of Uruz is health in the most literal sense. In a household where the weak did not survive the winter, physical strength was not a luxury but a condition for survival. Therefore, Uruz is read as vitality: the ability to recover quickly from illness, withstand loads, and not give up halfway.

Uruz stands second in the row immediately after Fehu not by chance: prosperity needs strength to protect and multiply it. If Fehu is about what has already been acquired, then Uruz is about what is used to obtain it: body, will, perseverance.

The inscription of Uruz is ᚢ: a long stem and a short diagonal line extending from its upper point downwards and to the right. In Fehu, both branches are raised — the horns point to the sky; in Uruz, the line goes down, as if the horn is lowered and aimed for a strike. The difference is only in one direction, but it is precisely this that distinguishes the rune of calm accumulation from the rune of pressure.

Uruz is written in two movements: first, a vertical or slightly slanted stem from top to bottom, then a short diagonal from the upper point. The diagonal should remain noticeably shorter than the stem and not reach its lower end — otherwise, the sign begins to be read as Thurisaz, the next rune in the row, which has a triangular appendage added.

On our map, the sign is formed from the skull of an aurochs: the forehead line forms the stem, and the curved right horn forms the diagonal. The rune is asymmetrical, it has a clear top and bottom, so the direction of the diagonal immediately reveals whether it is upright or reversed.

Upright Uruz is a rune of an influx of strength. It means that the resource is not in the wallet, but in the body and will: energy to take on difficult tasks, endurance to see them through, and health that does not fail at the crucial moment. It is one of the most powerful "runes of action" — where Fehu asks to calculate, Uruz simply commands to go.

In a health reading, upright Uruz is almost always a good sign: the body is coping, recovery is faster than expected, the body can withstand the load. In a business reading, it means breaking through an obstacle with force, not cunning — a moment when it is better not to look for a detour, but to tackle it directly.

This directness also has a downside: Uruz does not teach how to calculate a blow, it teaches how to deliver it. Therefore, next to runes of reason and measure, it should be read as "act, but not headlong."

Reversed Uruz is strength that has run out or is misdirected. Most often, it indicates a decline: fatigue that does not pass after rest, illness that drags on longer than usual, a task for which there is no longer enough resilience. The aurochs in this position does not attack, but stands in place, exhausted.

A second interpretation is strength without purpose. Stubbornness that proves nothing, an argument for the sake of argument, an attempt to break through circumstances where not power, but patience or cunning is needed. Reversed Uruz often appears as a warning: pressure in this direction only wastes resources that are better saved.

A third option is health as a direct warning: do not ignore fatigue, do not postpone a doctor's visit, do not work through pain. Unlike many reversed runes, the advice here is extremely specific — reduce the load before the body does it itself.

In a relationship reading, Uruz speaks of physical attraction and character, rather than calculation and care, like Fehu. It is the rune of attraction that is difficult to explain in words: it is felt in the body before it is realized by the mind. It often appears where two people are drawn to each other by the partner's strength of character — their will, confidence, vitality.

To the question about a person's feelings, upright Uruz answers: the attraction is genuine and strong, it is not feigned and not built on benefit. Such a connection is rarely calm — it has drive, sometimes almost animalistic directness — but this is precisely what is felt as life, not routine.

Reversed Uruz in relationships warns of rudeness: strength directed not towards care, but towards pressure, jealousy as a form of control, a partner who achieves by force where they should have heard "no." Sometimes it also speaks of decline — a relationship from which energy has gone, leaving only inertia.

In matters, Uruz is the rune of starting with strength, not calculation. It fits well with questions about launching something new: not "is it profitable?", but "will there be enough strength to see it through?". Upright Uruz answers – there will be, and often advises not to postpone: the current energy reserve is not infinite, it should be used.

This is the rune of physical labor, repair, sports, any work where the result depends on bodily endurance, not just on a plan. It describes negotiations and competition well: the winner will not be the one with the cleverest scheme, but the one who can take a punch better.

Reversed Uruz on money and work means exhaustion before the goal: the project started with excess enthusiasm, but there wasn't enough strength to finish; overtime that doesn't pay off anything but fatigue. The advice is the same as for health – calculate your pace in advance, not when your reserves are already at zero.

Upright Uruz is a firm yes, especially if the question concerns action, health, or starting something new. It answers not "will it work?", but "will there be enough strength?" – and this is often the real question beneath the question.

Reversed Uruz is no, but not a prohibition, rather a warning: now is not the time, resources are running out. If the rune appears for a health question, the "no" should be taken literally and not to push yourself.

To questions about people and feelings, Uruz answers not about facts, but about character: it's more likely to say "he is strong and genuine" than "yes, he will call." In such readings, it's better to interpret it not as an answer, but as a description of who you are dealing with.

In the past position, Uruz says the situation began with a test of strength – difficulties that had to be overcome through sheer force, not by circumventing them. In the present position, it means that the energy reserve is available right now, and the only question is whether you will decide to use it. In the future position, Uruz promises a surge of energy or recovery – after a decline comes a rise.

Uruz first in a spread reads as "act while you have the strength": it sets the tone of drive for the entire spread. Uruz last – "the result will come through endurance, not luck": what seemed impossible will be achieved through persistence.

The meaning of the rune is worth remembering as a talisman: Uruz does not replace treatment or add strength on its own – it's about reminding yourself of your own resources, not about a magical external energy source. Therefore, it's often chosen not instead of effort, but along with it: as a symbol of determination to see things through.

In modern practice, Uruz is found on bracelets, pendants, and in tattoos of athletes. It is applied strictly in the upright position: the reversed form of Uruz has its own, weakened meaning.
