Why Photos Come Out Sideways In the First Place

A camera does not physically turn its sensor when you tilt the phone. It writes the picture the way the sensor saw it and adds a note in the file — an EXIF orientation tag — saying which way up it should be shown. Programs that read the tag display the photo correctly; programs that ignore it show it lying on its side. That single inconsistency is why a photo can look perfect in your gallery, arrive sideways in a chat, and then appear upright again in a browser. Rotating the picture here solves it permanently, because the rotation is baked into the pixels themselves rather than left as a note that software may or may not honour. A practical detail: rotating by 90° or 180° means the picture is drawn again and re-encoded, so a JPG passes through compression once more. At high quality that is invisible, and if you want a mathematically exact result you can switch the output format to PNG, which is lossless. Everything runs in your browser, so a hundred holiday photos are fixed without any of them being uploaded anywhere.

The picture is re-encoded, so a JPG technically passes through compression a second time; at high quality this is invisible. Choose PNG as the output format if you want a pixel-exact result.

Can I rotate by an arbitrary angle, like 5°?

Not here — this tool does quarter and half turns, which is what a sideways photo needs. An arbitrary angle would leave empty corners that have to be cropped or filled, which is a different job.

Why does my photo look right on the phone but sideways elsewhere?

Because the phone reads the orientation tag in the file and the other program ignores it. Rotating the photo here writes the correct orientation into the pixels, so it looks the same everywhere.
