Why a Screenshot Weighs So Much as PNG
PNG stores an image losslessly: every pixel is written down exactly as it is, which is precisely what you want for interface screenshots, diagrams and anything with crisp text or transparency. The price is weight. A full-screen capture on a modern display easily reaches three or four megabytes, and mail clients, ticket systems, government portals and upload forms routinely refuse files that size. JPEG takes the opposite approach: it approximates the picture in a way the eye barely notices and shrinks it several times over.
