What an AVIF File Is and Why Nothing Opens It
AVIF is the newest of the web image formats — a still frame of the AV1 video codec, wrapped in the same container HEIC uses. Its advantage is real: at the same visual quality it is roughly half the size of JPEG and noticeably lighter than WebP, which is why large sites have started serving it by default. Browsers handle it fine, and that is exactly where the trouble begins. The moment you save such a picture, it stops being a web resource and becomes a file — and the file lands in a world that has not caught up. Windows Photo Viewer shows nothing, older versions of Photoshop refuse to open it, upload forms reject it, print shops ask for “a normal picture”. Converting to JPG puts the image back into the format every program on earth understands. Here the decoding is done by your own browser, which already knows AVIF, and the picture is then re-encoded as JPEG at the quality you choose — nothing is uploaded and nothing is watermarked. One expected consequence: the JPG will usually be larger than the AVIF it came from, sometimes twice as large. That is the price of universal compatibility, not a defect.

Nothing happens when I add my file — why?
Almost certainly an old browser. AVIF is decoded by the browser itself, and support arrived in Chrome 85, Firefox 93 and Safari 16.4. Updating the browser, or opening the page in a newer one, solves it — the file itself is fine.
What happens to a transparent background?
JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white. When the transparency matters — logos, icons, stickers — use the AVIF to PNG converter instead.
