45x45 mm Photo for a Japanese Visa Application

Make a Japan visa photo online free with AI. Upload a selfie — AI crops it to 45x45 mm, sets a plain white background and sizes the head to Japanese visa requirements. Ready to print.

Japan Visa Photo Requirements

  • Square 45x45 mm — — Japan uses a square frame, not the 35x45 mm rectangle common in Europe; a European photo does not fit
  • Head about 27 mm — — from chin to the top of the head, with roughly 4 mm of free space above the hair
  • Plain white background — — no pattern, no gradient and no shadow behind the head or shoulders
  • Taken within the last 6 months — — the photo has to reflect your current appearance; older photos are refused
  • Face fully open — — no hat, no hair over the eyes, ears preferably visible, looking straight into the camera
  • Neutral expression — — mouth closed, no smile, both eyes open and clearly visible

How to Make a Japan Visa Photo Online

  1. Upload a front-facing photo or a selfie with even lighting
  2. AI replaces the background with plain white and crops the frame to a 45x45 mm square
  3. Check the result — head centered, free space above the hair, no shadows
  4. Download the photo and print it or attach it to your visa application

Why a Japanese Visa Photo Is Square

The most common reason a Japanese visa application comes back is the frame itself: Japan asks for a square 45x45 mm photo, while most people bring the 35x45 mm rectangle used for European visas and national passports. Cropping the rectangle down does not work — the head ends up too large and the margin above the hair disappears. The second recurring problem is the background: it must be plain white and free of the soft shadow a phone camera leaves behind the shoulders. AI rebuilds the frame from your own photo — it detects the face, cuts a true square, sizes the head to about 27 mm of the frame, replaces the background with clean white and evens out the lighting.

Japan Visa Photo FAQ

What size is a Japan visa photo?

45x45 mm — a square frame. The head measures about 27 mm from chin to crown, with roughly 4 mm of space above the hair.

Can I use a 35x45 mm photo instead?

No. The 35x45 mm format used for Schengen visas and many national passports has different proportions, and cropping it to a square breaks the head size. Make the square version from your original photo.

What background is required?

Plain white with no pattern and no shadow. AI removes whatever is behind you and replaces it with an even white backdrop.

Will the consulate accept this photo?

AI builds the photo to the standard Japanese requirements — 45x45 mm, white background, correct head size and neutral expression. Check the current guidance of the embassy or visa center you are applying through before you submit.

Is it free?

Yes. New users get starter energy points — no sign-up needed, and enough to make your first visa photo.
