Why the India E-Visa Upload Rejects Photos
The Indian e-visa portal checks the file before a person ever sees it, and most rejections come down to shape and size. The photo has to be square — height equal to width — which catches out anyone reusing a 35x45 mm photo made for a Schengen visa, and it has to be at least 350 by 350 pixels while staying under roughly a megabyte. After that the usual problems are a background that is not quite white, a shadow falling across one side of the face, or a crop that cuts off the top of the head.
