Past Simple Tense Practice - Regular Verbs
Exercise 1: Read and complete
This exercise requires completing the past tense forms of regular verbs. Let's fill in each one:
- skip → skipped (given)
- laugh → laughed
- pass → passed
- stop → stopped
- try → tried
- want → wanted
- climb → climbed
- cry → cried
Rule reminder:
- For most verbs, we add -ed
- For verbs ending in 'y', change 'y' to 'i' and add -ed
- For short verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant, double the final consonant and add -ed
Exercise 2: Read and write
This exercise requires putting verbs in parentheses into the past tense form. Let's complete each sentence:
- We visited (visit) our grandmother last Sunday. (given)
- I talked (talk) to my friend last night.
- The children played (play) a game two hours ago.
- I phoned (phone) Mark yesterday.
- We traveled (travel) to Spain last summer.
- Sue helped (help) me with my homework yesterday.
- We painted (paint) our house five days ago.
- They watched (watch) a really good film yesterday.
Note: All these verbs are regular past tense forms, following the basic rule of adding -ed to the base form of the verb.
